Mahesh's field had stopped giving. Years of drought and overuse had left it dry and cracked, the kind of land that earns pity and little else. A second season felt less like a hope than a memory.

The turnaround began underground, with the soil rather than the crop. Restoring soil health, introducing better seeds and climate-smart techniques, and adding efficient drip irrigation gave the field a fighting chance against the very dry spell that had beaten it before.

The harder problem was the market. Even a good harvest earns too little when middlemen take the margin. Selling together through a farmer collective changed the arithmetic — a fairer price, and for the first time, a reason to plan ahead.

Key takeaways

  • Soil health comes before yield
  • Efficient irrigation carries the dry spell
  • Fair market links keep value with the grower

Now the field grows two crops a year, and the conversation at home has changed. It is no longer about surviving the season. It is about the next one, and the one after that.
